Hey everyone,
I’m hoping to get some advice about early weight gain after starting testosterone. I’ve been taking 300 mg for about 11 days and have already gained around 6 to 10 pounds. I was traveling right after my first injection, so I missed a few weigh-ins and don’t know exactly how fast the change happened.
I’ve heard that some of the first weight gain can be from water and glycogen, but I want to know what’s really going on. Yesterday I walked about 25,000 steps, ate around 2,600 calories, and still woke up about a pound heavier.
I’m not too concerned about gaining weight if it means I look better, but I’d like to know if these early changes are mostly just water or if something else is going on.
Has anyone else had a similar jump in weight after starting testosterone? How did your weight change in the weeks that followed?
Gaining 6 to 10 pounds in 11 days is almost never all muscle or fat. Most of that early increase is likely just water, glycogen, or having more food and water in your body.
Testosterone can make your body hold onto more water, especially at first. Changes in your carb or salt intake while traveling can also make the scale jump. Being one pound heavier after walking 25,000 steps does not mean much, since your weight can fluctuate by several pounds from day to day.
Try not to stress about single weigh-ins. Instead, weigh yourself each morning under the same conditions and look at your weekly averages. In another three or four weeks, you will have a much clearer picture of your real progress.
