Caberos (cabergoline) is a potent dopamine receptor agonist used to prevent side-effects (such as gynecomastia and sexual dysfunction) caused by elevated prolactin levels. In-vitro animal studies show that cabergoline has a direct inhibitory effect on the prolactin secretion in the lactotroph cells of the pituitary gland resulting in decreased serum prolactin levels. The secretion of prolactin by the anterior pituitary is mainly under hypothalamic inhibitory control, likely mediated through release of dopamine. Cabergoline is a long-acting dopamine receptor agonist with a high affinity for D2 receptors. Besides this main effect, cabergoline also helps to combat other dopamine related conditions such as difficulties with concentrating, attention deficit disorder, and depression.
