I want to share a story that stuck with me. I used to hit the gym with a 27-year-old ex-military man who exemplified fitness and looked like a tank: massive arms, razor-sharp haircut. However, his heart was failing beneath his skin. He had an ejection fraction of 10%. His ankles were swollen, he was in danger of requiring a heart transplant, and he could barely walk down a hallway without experiencing acute dyspnea. Like his muscles, his heart was enormous, but it could hardly pump enough blood to sustain him. He had an implanted defibrillator for dangerous arrhythmias, which shocked him several times. Denial worsened the damage steroids did to his heart. He was strained, depressed, and unable to perform on his wedding night. This story highlights a vital lesson: outward strength doesn't guarantee inner health. Steroid use may enhance muscle, but it can come at the expense of the heart, with devastating consequences.
