I recently had a serious allergic reaction and was given a high dose of dexamethasone along with other emergency medications. Over the next week, I started having terrible insomnia, intense anxiety, a racing heartbeat, and some strange thoughts that made me worry about psychosis.
I’ve never had anxiety or other mental health issues before, so this sudden change has been really scary. I’ve also noticed that my period hasn’t come back since I stopped birth control, which isn’t normal for me.
I’ve talked to doctors, but I still don’t feel like I have a clear answer about what’s going on. I’ve read that corticosteroids can cause big changes in mood, sleep, and mental health, so I’m wondering if anyone else has gone through something like this after taking dexamethasone.
If you’ve had a similar experience, how long did it take for things to get better? What kind of follow-up care helped you?
I’m mostly looking for your experiences and any advice on what to ask my doctor.
