Why Core Training Feels Different from Strength Training

While core training and strength training play their own important role in a comprehensive fitness routine, they can yield vastly different sensations and fitness results. Even if it isn't extreme weightlifting, many people feel that the hard core exercise can be particularly challenging. The discomfort and shaking from planks to hollow holds, hanging leg raises, and other exercises intended to "fatigue the muscles" are more intense than what is felt from standard strength movements such as squats, deadlifts, and bench presses.

This distinction is because of the special functions of the core in the human body. Strength training is a focus on moving outside loads and building strength, whereas core training emphasizes stability and posture and improving the way you move. Recognising these differences can help athletes/enthusiasts to better understand the importance of both styles of training and also help them better understand and use these in their training.

What Is Core Training? Understanding True Core Stability

Core training is all about building the stability of the spine and pelvis by engaging the ligaments and muscles holding them together. This seems easy, but there is a lot of confusion over what exactly the “core” is.

The Core Is More Than Just Abs

Your core muscles consist of a group of deep muscles which are:

  • Transversus abdominis (TA)
  • Multifidus (small muscles around the spine)
  • Pelvic floor muscles
  • Diaphragm
  • Gluteal muscles (especially gluteus medius and minimus)
  • Deep hip stabilisers
  • Muscles around your shoulder blades and lower back

These muscles stabilize the joints in an isometric contraction, which is a contraction without movement during routine or sports activities. This stability makes your body easier to hurt and promotes body movements that aren't normal.

Muscle Fibre Types in the Core

To gain better insight into core stability, it is best to examine the types of muscle fibres:

  • Fast-twitch fibres (Type II): These are fibres that are involved in stronger and faster movements such as running and jumping. These fibres get easily tired.
  • Slow-twitch fibres (Type I): Used for prolonged, low-force activities such as endurance running and maintaining posture. These tend to be an important factor for core stability.

The core stabilising muscles have more slow-twitch fibres and are able to work for longer durations without fatigue. This helps other muscles to control and align the body during a movement.

What Is Weight Training?

Weight training, or resistance training, is also called strength training and can be done using resistance (dumbbells, barbells, resistance bands or body weights) to promote strength and muscle power.

Main Goals of Weight Training:

  • Increase muscle mass (hypertrophy)
  • Improve muscular strength
  • Enhance bone density
  • Boost metabolic rate
  • Improve overall physical performance.

The majority of weight-training routines, such as squats, bench presses, or deadlifts, have more than one joint and muscle group engaged. These are usually powered by fast-twitch muscle fibers, which can produce power but quickly tire out.

How Core Training and Weight Training Work Together

Core training seems to be split off from weight training and it might logically seem like it's one or the other. However, the reality is, they complement each other, and both are required for a well-rounded, injury-proof frame.

Think of Core Training as the Foundation

The base support that your body needs for good weight training involves core stability.

  • Core stabilisers need to be engaged before you lift weights, and to ensure that your spine, hip, and shoulders remain aligned.
  • If core control is not developed properly, weight training can stress joints and tissues and run a risk of injury, particularly the back, knees, or shoulders.

The Progression From Core to Weights in Rehab

Low-load controlled movement exercises are often used in Phase 1 of the injury rehab programme and typically start focusing on the core at Logan Physio. The exercises are aimed at retraining your stabilising muscles and regaining functional control around the injured joint.

After core control has been enhanced and it is no longer painful, weight-bearing and/or resistance exercises begin, then gradually increase in external load with proper technique maintained.

Why Good Form Matters in Weight Training

Have you ever heard the term “lift with good form”? Not for show but to engage the core stabilisers before and during the lift.

This is called pre-activation; it is to tighten or activate the core muscles before the big movement or dynamic movement. Use it like a stepping stone to start moving. If you don't do that, then you could be overusing the big muscles that make your leg move, such as the quadriceps or the trapezius, at the expense of the little muscles which control your joints.

Form + Stability = Strength and Safety

By combining core training and strength work correctly, you can:

  • Improve movement efficiency
  • Reduce the risk of injury.
  • Enhance athletic performance
  • Achieve long-term strength gains safely.

Examples of Core Training Exercises

These are exercise movements that are chosen for intended activation in order to stimulate and are often utilized during early rehab or foundational exercises:

  • Transversus abdominis bracing (lying or seated)
  • Dead bug
  • Bird dog
  • Glute bridge with pelvic control
  • Side planks
  • Single-leg balance work
  • Pelvic floor engagement with breathing

The teaching of these is structured, progressive, and ensures students recognise how their muscles are supposed to feel when they are used before progressing to the next muscle group.

Examples of Weight Training Exercises

These exercises make use of external resistance and engage the core muscles throughout:

  • Squats
  • Lunges
  • Deadlifts
  • Bench press
  • Shoulder press
  • Lat pulldown
  • Resistance band rows

To get the most benefit from these exercises, it’s critical to combine them with core pre-activation strategies.

What Happens If You Skip Core Training?

If you're not training your core and you're not back to your starting position after an injury, or if you are newer to exercise, these are some of the potential effects that can occur:

  • Poor posture and alignment
  • Lower back pain
  • Imbalances between muscle groups
  • Increased injury risk during weight training
  • Delayed recovery or recurring injuries

Why You Need Both Core and Weight Training

Core and weights are not opposing muscle groups; they are a team that can work together! Each performs very different and indispensable functions which are all vital to the development of a strong, functional and pain-free body.

  • Core training stabilises, aligns and controls your body in all its movements and stillnesses.
  • Strength training will enable you to develop strength, build muscle and recover from life and sport.

By understanding how they differ – and more importantly, how they work together – you’ll be in a better position to train effectively, reduce injury risk, and achieve your health and fitness goals.

While core training may be distinct from strength training, it's undeniably linked and also truly important for general fitness and physical performance.
